Environment:

This applies to LDMS 9.5, SP1, SP2

Description:

In scenario where you'd like to utilize LDMS and the Inventory Scanner to read HDD serial numbers from your nodes you may encounter the following result:

HDD1.PNG

Example of an authentic disk serial number S0TYNYBBB16840, but it will be reported under Inventory as 20202020202030535954e4242314238363231. It doesn't matter if the manufacturer is Dell, HP, IBM, Samsung etc. Results look the same. To quickly check whether hard drive serial is returned correctly on your machine outside the Landesk console run Windows Powershell as an admin and type in the following:

"Get-WmiObject Win32_PhysicalMedia | Format-Table Tag, SerialNumber ", verify whether serial number is accurate.

Solution:

Please find attached Powershell script that will collect correct HDD information from your end machines and put it in the Inventory and/or in the Custom Data.

1) adjust the script to your needs. E.g. change the sub-level within custom data where this data shall be stored.

2) use the script to create software package within the LANDesk console (as if you would like to install software. There is an option for PowerShell scripts specifically).

3) assign a Admin user to the package (within the credential section).

4) create a task and run the script against your devices.

PLEASE NOTE: The information gets overwritten the next time scheduled Inventory task runs, unless you write the data specifically into the custom data section, where it's safe.
